The Birth actress is desperate to win her battle against smoking, but admits she won't know what to do with her hands when she kicks the unhealthy habit. She says: 'I have tried and tried and I am almost there now. But I still need something to do with my hands.'" Thursday, April 28, 2005

Movie Review: 'The Interpreter', with Nicole Kidman reviewjournal.com -- Neon: Movie Review: 'The Interpreter': "What's in a name? When the name of the movie is 'The Interpreter,' more -- and less -- than meets the eye. A contemporary political thriller with class and sporadic smarts, 'The Interpreter' benefits from the presence of two Academy Award-winning stars -- Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn -- under the assured direction of another Oscar-winning veteran, Sydney Pollack. Pollack, of course, knows his way around the thriller, having demonstrated his ease and expertise with pulse-pounders as different as 1975's 'Three Days of the Condor' and 1993's 'The Firm.' And while 'The Interpreter' takes place in a thoroughly contemporary world clouded by genocide and terrorism, the movie also boasts a few refreshingly old-fashioned attributes. Chief among them: an attention to character (and character development) that makes 'The Interpreter' more than just a jigsaw-puzzle movie preoccupied with the mechanics of fitting its pieces together. It's a good thing, too, because 'The Interpreter' displays such dismaying disregard for logic and momentum at its climax, it almost cancels out everything good that's gone before." Kidman, Penn and Annan Attend Interpreter Premiere at Tribeca Kidman, Penn and Annan Attend Interpreter Premiere at Tribeca: "The Fourth Annual Tribeca Film Festival opened today with the premiere of The Interpreter. Over the next 12 days, more than 250 films will be shown, thousands will take to the streets of Tribeca for the annual Family Festival Street Fair, and various other special events. Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn, who both star in the thriller, attended the premiere. Also present was Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of the United Nations, where the film is largely set. Other stars attending on the night were Elle MacPherson, Ellen Barkin and Jack Nicholson." Monday, April 18, 2005
Nic tipped Watts for Interpreter The Daily Telegraph | Nic tipped Watts for Interpreter: "Nicole Kidman beat out good friend Naomi Watts and Oscar winner Charlize Theron for the starring role in The Interpreter. The thriller's director, Sydney Pollack, revealed he picked Kidman because she was the 'most believable' of the three actresses on his short-list to play United Nations interpreter Silvia Broome. 'The three people I thought about were Charlize, Nicole and Naomi Watts,' Pollack told AAP in an interview in Los Angeles. Many in Hollywood thought Theron, the South African beauty and Oscar winner last year for Monster, would have been Pollack's ideal choice to play Broome. The character has an African accent – a mixture of Swahili and Shona. 'I think Charlize Theron could have done it too, but I don't think anybody could have done it as well as Nicole,' Pollack said. Kidman and Pollack have been friends for more than 10 years and worked on numerous projects together, but The Interpreter was the first time Kidman has acted in a film directed by Pollack." Kidman back in US, 'already homesick' Kidman back in US, 'already homesick': "A refreshed Nicole Kidman is back at work in Los Angeles, joking about pregnancy rumours and admitting she's already homesick for Australia. The days of lying around in her mum and dad's Sydney home during her four-month Australian summer sojourn are now pleasant memories. The Oscar-winning actor was on the hustings at the Four Seasons hotel in Beverly Hills, spreading the word about her new thriller, The Interpreter, to international journalists. While the talk centred on her role as Silvia Broome, an African-born United Nations interpreter who unearths an assassination plot, Kidman could not resist poking fun at the gossip that she was pregnant. 'I'm wearing a maternity dress now,' Kidman, exquisitely covered in a sexy sapphire coloured Givenchy dress, told reporters. The actor, who adopted two children, Isabella and Connor, with ex-husband Tom Cruise, was still regretting her recent 'I want to have a baby' remark during an interview on Australia's Network Ten."
